Woldingham School is part of the Sacred Heart’s network of independent girl’s schools situated close to Caterham in Surrey. There are a total of 531 students spread across years 7 to 11 and the sixth form.
The Challenge
The school needed a way to speed up morning and afternoon attendance registration and take away the need for a staff member to be present. Fingertip registration was preferred though there were some concerns about its reliability and also acceptance by parents. For user convenience and to avoid enrolling fingertips twice and keep costs down a single biometric database was required to share fingertip information between the newly installed Oliver Library Management System and the Attendance system.
The Solution
The Live Register Attendance system with biometric terminals was installed, these terminals operate unattended and, due to tight integration, attendance marks are written straight back into the PASS MIS database allowing students to self register; this removes the need for a staff member to be present. Student fingertips were scanned into the Live Register Identity Manager at the start of term and matched to student information in the MIS, these scans are shared with the Library system so students can access both systems with their fingertip.

The installation happened very quickly and efficiently over a weekend in summer. Prior to this Live Register supplied us with documents and web information that allowed us to communicate out to parents and remove any negative misconceptions about fingertip scanning – the reaction has been very positive. We found the system easy to implement and, so far, very reliable. An important aspect of the system is the Live Register Identity Manager which gives us a number of cost effective options for extending the use of fingertip detection to other systems in the future.
